Melodrama

In the grass beside the hydrangeas

a sign reading A GHOST.

The husband’s taking tea with

his wife upon the lawn.

She looks stern: their daughter

drifts in white and blurrs.

The villain enters on a trike.

His silent eloquence is thin and loud

with gestures of conquest.

The hero draped in hat and cloak

ruptures the hydrangeas on the right.

He’s arrived at last:

THE CHASE. Bodies fall

on bodies but the villain gets away.

Like a virus that mutates he

squirms to fight another day.

The husband teaches drama, his wife

owns a café in New York,

their daughter teaches music.

The hero’s a lawyer, sends his sons

to Kings. The villain’s lost

in Spain. A GHOST.
